The Paper Project – Experiment IX

I have another paper project experiment and even though there are a few samples missing, I thought I would posted what I had and update it later if I got the chance.  So without further adieu, here’s experiment number nine!

Experiment IX – UV Rays

The purpose of this experiment is to see what happens to the paper and Copic markers once they are exposed to UV Rays (aka “the sun”) after long periods of time.

To setup this experiment, I placed each sample square down and used a purple, black and red Copic marker to draw three horizontal lines.  I then scanned this as the starting point so I could visualize the change after it was finished.  Then for a week, I set out the paper in the morning and took it in by night.  Ah, yes, it did rain one and I forgot to bring it in another night so the sprinkler got it, but perhaps it added to the test.  LOL  Anyway, it was a good week of full sun light and the results were interesting.

The papers are identified in the Introduction and here are the results:
(Click on the picture for a zoomed look.)

As you can see there are differences but let me go into the details of what I noticed.  First on the right side is the original and then on the left is pasted the end results.   What I had expected was that the black would fade the most and found it most interesting that it was the purple that was the most effected.  Also, I was expecting that all papers would fade to some degree, however, they all seemed to behave about the same.  The papers became a little more dry and brittle but basically kept their qualities.

Unfortunately, this test was completed without samples of U, V and X so it is missing from this test.

The biggest change was in the colors and I’ve categorized them into two groups – “ok” and “not so ok”.  The not so ok group includes B, C, D, E, F, G, J, L, M, N, P, Q, R and S.

For what it’s worth, the papers that I would recommend, if you’re so included to put something outside, would be AH, I, K, O, T and W.

Sid & Nebula

Are you ready for another background?  This time I went under the sea and created a background for Sid & Nebula to swim around in!!  Because of their name sake, these two reminded me of the amazing colors in a nebula and I wanted to get a little of that color into this.  So I added some yellows and greens then went heavy with the blues.

This background started with a bunch of yellow, green, blue and turquoise patches.  Then starting from the bottoms I covered it all similar to the way I did the night time sky.  I used B99 and blended all the way up to B91.  Then at the bottom I started adding seaweed with the darkest BG, G and YG colors.  The fish were added with another dark color, probably B99, and finally I used the blended pen to add some bubbles and finished those off with the gel pen with more colors.  I love how it turned out – more so than my last one.

Now that I have a couple of these finished, I’m going to add a new label named “… Full Background Techniques” so we can easily see them.  And yes, I say we, because often times I go back and wonder just how I did that so I can reproduce it again.  LOL  So far, each one is unique.

The image I used is Sid & Nebula from Little Miss Muffet Stamps and was released this week along with some other great fantasy horses!  You should check out the awesome release in the What’s New section and thanks so much for stopping by today.  *Hugs

Steampunk Gang Jacob

Here’s an interesting project that has been on my desk for a while and I finally finished it this week.  The image is Steampunk Gang Jacob from Simply B Stamps and I enlarged it to fill the the card and bring Jacob more into focus.  After coloring Jacob, I decided to go all out and experiment on the background using red tones and keeping it in the earth tones.  This is what I came up with …

Every single time I do a background like this I mumble to myself “it’s ruined, it’s ruined!” LOL  Seriously, it never starts out the way I like it and with all the bold colors being gradually added in splotches, I truly think this one will end up in the rubbish.  It just goes to show that some techniques never look finished until… well… until their finished!

My blending on this one isn’t as smooth as I wanted it to be so I decided to add slashes in the background to hide the fumbles.  It keeps up with the edgie feeling that the image already has and to help them blend into the background I added leaves as a final touch.  After that, it started to look ok and I decided it was time to stop while I was ahead.  He he he.

This fits right into the monthly challenge at Simply Challenged Challenges – the theme is “Fall / School Inspired” and perhaps this is Mr. Newton the new math teacher.  ;D

Hollywood

I have another tutorial posted over at Make it Crafty Blog today and this one was in request by Alyce who wanted to see how I had colored my last night time sky.  I’ve merged Ashlyn and Hollywood Sign together from Make it Crafty and came up with a little scene to work on.

All sorts of crazy ideas were going through my demented mind as I was coloring this image and trying to think of the true meaning behind it.  I was originally going for a glamorous model with the Hollywood Signwhich would represent movies and fame but after reading about the history of the sign, I couldn’t keep my mind from wandering.  LOL

I could have colored the hair blond then I could have made some reference to Holli Would from Cool World.  Maybe it’s a tribute to Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, since he donate over $127,700 dollars to preserve the sign.  Perhaps if I had drawn a little body underneath the ‘H’ then it could be a tribute to the Broadway actress Peg Entwistle who committed suicide – morbid, I know.  Oh, I know – maybe this is a later version of “SUSAN” from Monsters vs Aliens after she grows her hair out for a photo shoot!  He he he

Anyway, I hope you get a chance to see the tutorial over on the MiC blog and that it helps a little.  Both images are a fun to color and an odd combination, I know.  Thanks for coming by!
