Did you know? The Siamese is one of the first distinctly recognized breeds of Oriental cat. The exact origins of the breed are unknown, but it is believed to be from Southeast Asia, and is said to be descended from the sacred temple cats of Siam (now Thailand). Today there are over a dozen breeds derived from the Siamese.

Did you know? The British tomb of The Unknown Warrior holds an unidentified British soldier killed on a European battlefield during the First World War. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, London on 11 November 1920, simultaneously with a similar interment of a French unknown soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in France, making both tombs the first to honor the unknown dead of the First World War.

Did you know? In Harry Potter, Diagon Alley (a play on the word “diagonally”) is a fictional High street located in London. If a wizard or witch needs something, chances are that it can be found in Diagon Alley. The DVD of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets includes a video “guided tour” of Diagon Alley, apparently shot on the original film sets.

Did you know? Corduroy is a textile composed of twisted fibers that, when woven, lie parallel (similar to twill) to one another to form the cloth’s distinct pattern, a “cord.” Modern corduroy is most commonly composed of tufted cords, sometimes exhibiting a channel (bare to the base fabric) between the tufts. Corduroy is, in essence, a ridged form of velvet.

Did you know? In physics, all magnets have two poles that are distinguished by the direction of the magnetic flux. Based on the early use of magnets in compasses they were named the “north pole” (or more explicitly “north-seeking pole”), “N”, and the “south pole” (or “south-seeking pole”), “S”. Because opposite poles attract, the Earth’s North Magnetic Pole is therefore, by this definition, physically a magnetic field south pole. Conversely, the Earth’s South Magnetic Pole is physically a magnetic field north pole.

Did you know? A concertina is a free-reed musical instrument, like the various accordions and the harmonica. It has a bellows and buttons typically on both ends of it. When pressed, the buttons travel in the same direction as the bellows, unlike accordion buttons which travel perpendicularly to it. Also, each button produces one note, while accordions typically can produce chords with a single button.
