Did you know? The Elk or Wapiti is one of the largest species of deer on the Earth and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. In the deer family, only the larger moose (which is called an “elk” in Europe) and Sambar rival the elk in size. Some cultures revere the elk as a spiritual force and in parts of Asia, antlers and their velvet are used in traditional medicines.

Gingerbread Plushie

The challenge this week at Lollipop Crafts is to create a card or project Welcoming Winter. The cool blues next to the vibrant reds reminds of cold winter days and frosty windows. So to kick up for inspiration, I made this card using the free Gingerbread Plushie from The Stamping Bazaar.

I colored the scarf to match the gingham ribbon and added a small gingerbread cookie cutter trinket as a simple embellishment. I thought the pair together was cute.

Did you know? Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s. It involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

Did you know? Charles “Charlie” Brown is the main protagonist in the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz. Charlie Brown and his creator have a common connection in that they are both the sons of barbers, but whereas Schulz’s work is described as the “most shining example of the American success story”, Charlie Brown is an example of “the great American un-success story” in that he fails in almost everything he does.

Did you know? Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game first published in 1974 and is widely regarded as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry. D&D departs from traditional wargaming and assigns each player a specific character to play instead of a military formation. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master serves as the game’s referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur.

Did you know? Edith Louisa Cavell was a British nurse, humanitarian and spy. She is celebrated for helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She is well-known for her statement that “patriotism is not enough.” Her strong Anglican beliefs propelled her to help all those who needed it, both German and Allied soldiers. She was quoted as saying, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved”. Cavell was also an influential pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.

Did you know? In its early form, the candy cane began as a simple white stick of sugar for children to enjoy – there was no “cane” shape or stripes to speak of. These sticks were made by confectioners who had to pull, cut, twist, and (in later years) bend the sugar sticks by hand, making it a time-intensive process. Candy cane production had to be done locally, since they were easily damaged and vulnerable to moisture.
