Gnomey Harry

While check out the latest whimsical release in the store, I was intrigued by how some of the characters were colors, specifically in the style Gnomey Harry and his whimsical friends are colored.   So I thought I’d give it a try and see if I could figure it out.  I don’t think I understand it all the way but what I ended up trying out was a no-blending technique.  (I know, I know, it’s completely the opposite of the current coloring challenge… but hay, I gotta grab inspiration when it happens.  LOL)

The technique on this project was to color without blending at all.  Let me tell you, it was mentally challenging!  LOL   In most areas I used three colors, a light, medium and dark color.  I would color the area with the light color then block in the medium tone and ending up adding the dark tone in the most shadowed areas.  Then I added specks of the medium and dark colors to add texture.

The large mushroom ended up using five colors but I think I was able to stick to the three colors rule for the rest of the image.  The last thing I did was go back in and add white gel pen for the highlights.  I got a little carried away in the grass area but that just inspired me to try it again on another image.  LOL   That’s my least favorite part.  😦  But my most favorite part is how the brown parts of the mushroom and the gnome turned out.  I think those are the best areas for what I was trying to achieve.

This was an interesting challenge for myself and a new way to color an image.  I’m certainly going to try it out again and hopefully I’ll get faster each time.  Anyway, I hope you’ve been inspired to try something new as well!  Thanks for taking a look.

Call Me Chester

Today is a Sunday Spotlight over at Little Miss Muffet Stamps and I chose one of Pollycraft’s images to feature… Call Me Chester!  This is an adorable little monkey and I had a bit of fun with him today as well.  😀  You can click HERE to visit the LMMS blog and check out the details of the spotlight or skip right on over to the store and snag this little fella while he’s on sale!!

The images I used on this project is  Call Me Chester from Little Miss Muffet Stamps, of course, and also a sentiment from Make it Crafty called Just Wanted to Say Sentiment.  I’ve enjoyed using that stamp so much – it’s the perfect size to add to any card!

When I started with this image I stamped it twice because I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it… I wanted to use a Wobble Spring!!  This fun gizmo has a plastic string sandwiched in between two stickers.  The stickers are then adhered to the base and the part you want to stand out and wobble.  Once it’s attached, you can crank the spring and let it go for some fun animation to your card!  Below is a picture of Chester’s head while in wobble action…

Ring ring!  Ring ring!  With the image being a phone I thought it was a perfect card to use the wobble spring and it’s been fun to play with too!  LOL  Thanks for coming by today and I hope you’ve enjoyed my card!  Don’t forget you can pick up Call Me Chester at 30% OFF this week at Little Miss Muffet Stamps!

Jr Hatter Lilith

For those who have been part of the Little Miss Muffet Stamps FaceBook group, know that there was a little competition put forth by Zoe (from Make it Crafty).  She challenged me (and everyone else) to color up Jr. Hatter Lilith using colored pencils.  For some, I’m sure that would be an easy task, but me, I have such a hard time with pencils that it truly was a challenge!  AND this is why Zoe picked it too!  LOL

The first thing I did was start by merging some images as I also wanted to include a background from Make it Crafty.  So on this project I’ve used Jr. Hatter Lilith and the Birds on a Wire Metal Die from Little Miss Muffet Stamps.  The mushrooms and clouds are from the Whimsical Digi Elements from Make it Crafty.

The coloring was interesting and I received a lot of help in the LMMS FB group too.  I was worried about all the specks of white that couldn’t be filled in and in the end, we decided that it was my paper that was causing the problem.  I tried everything from sharp pencils (which helped), circular coloring (also helped) and some type of blending solution (which partially helped only in some ares).  Of course, the smoother the surface was the better too but with the paper I had it didn’t seem to matter what I was coloring on.

Anyway, this is the final result!  You can check out the LMMS FB group for more samples as there has been a lot of people participating and even a few more yet to come!!  They’re all fantastic and so inspiring!

I’d like to enter this into the following challenges:
Oozak Challenge #17 – anything goes with girly theme
Craft Your Passion Challenge #17 – patchwork backgrounds

Pipi Faye

I had a totally different project that I was going to share with you today but the excitement in the MiC FB group of a new challenge was just too tempting to pass up!  The challenge we sent out by Melanie who chose these two images then stipulated it was a no lines challenge.  Gasp!  I struggle with no lines because I have to think differently about my coloring – imagine that.  LOL  But that’s what is so much fun about a true challenge which allows me to challenge my own personal style, my own skills and so on.  SO to make the long story short…. I accepted!  LOL

I thought I was finished then I remembered the currently monthly MiC challenge which was all about dew drops.  Jennifer has a fantastic tutorial (http://www.makeitcrafty.com/store-blog/techniques/moon-drops-water-drops-tutorial) on this blog about dew drops so I thought I’d add that into the mix – why not, right?  The tutorial was easy enough to follow but then after I was finished I realized the stark black lines of the dew drops were standing out like a sore thumb against the no-lines coloring.  Yikes!  Oh well, live and learn.

The images are from the new Whimsical collection that was just released which are absolutely adorable!  This is a merge of Pipi Faye and Whimsical Flowers background.   I had reversed Pipi Faye then zoomed in on the two so I didn’t have to color so much.  The image was colored with Copic markers then when the paper wouldn’t accept anymore ink (i.e. it just kept pushing it around and there wasn’t any more blending to be done) then I dragged out my Prismacolor Pencils and tried to finish it off.

The last thing I did was follow in the footsteps of Daria (http://daria-pn.blogspot.com/) and add the white pearls in the hair.  😀  I love getting inspiration from everyone and I hope this has bit of an inspiration to you as well.  Thanks for coming by and have a great weekend!

Siren of Pearls

Howdy folks!  Today (well actually a couple days ago) was my day on the Make it Crafty Blog to post something and and I’m here to welcome you back to another underwater tutorial.  This one uses the same steps as the last one, but with a different image, it might give you a different perspective too!  For this project I merged a few images together from the fabulous Make it Crafty store and grabbed one of the gorgeous mermaids to play with… Siren of Pearls.  All the colors and images are listed below in case you wanted to jot those down.

Step 1 – On this image, the sun will be shining into the water from the upper left corner and I start coloring the rays using B52.  Sometimes it helps me to put an object at the top corner so the angle of the rays radiate in a natural curvature.  Once the first layer of color is applied then I’ll remove the object and remember to be consistent on the direction of the rays. For each stroke of the marker, I use the side of the brush tip and always start outside the range of the image then drag in the direction of the ray with a quick motion.

Step 2 – Add darker rays with B93. When coloring an underwater scene like this, I like to start with the ocean background first.  That way I don’t have to worry about being precise and if I make a huge mistake then I can always start over without loosing too much.

Step 3 – I continued to add rays using B00, B93 and B52 until most of the ocean is colored.  It’s okay if the colors are bleeding into the rest of the image since I can either remove most of the color later with a Blender marker.  Plus having some of the blue in the rest of the image adds an overall underwater feel.

Step 4 – Now I change direction of coloring to start from the sea floor and use BG11 and BG15 to color up using the same technique.

Step 5 & 6 – Continue to darken the lower ocean with BG15 and G85 then blend in with BG11 and G00.  I like to pull the greens from the bottom up into the blues but not all the way to the top.  The darkest part is at the horizon of the image but I also add a little bit of color at each ridge in the seafloor.

Step 7 – I return back to add just a little more color using the original colors, B00, B93 and B52.

Step 8 – In this step I add seaweed much the same way I would color grass on another image; the difference being seaweed is more of a wavy line and a lot taller.  Clusters of seaweed are colored in using YG93, YG97, G85, G82 and G40.

Step 9 – At this point I’m able to look at the overall effect of the ocean and usually add a bit more color where I think it’s needed until it’s finished.  For this image, I added a touch of G21 and BG72 then blended a little with BG11.

Step 10 – I colored the rest of the image using a variety of bright colors.  Since the little fish were mostly colored already from the ocean technique, I used the Blender marker to remove a lot of it before coloring them.  I also brought in a little texture by using dots on the seafloor and the mermaids tail.

Step 11 – Once everything is colored, I can go back in with the Blender marker to create bubbles and use a white gel pen to add other highlights.  The pearls in the hair was a technique I learned from Daria (http://daria-pn.blogspot.com/) and loved the effect.

Step 12 – The final step is to trim around the image and place it on the card and embellish it.  Since the image takes up most of the card area, I clustered my embellishments in one area and left the rest of the card as-is.  Of course the scene looks great without embellishments too but I wanted to experiment with the Fancy Ribbon Sliders chipboard embellishments.  😀

Cynthia

Some of the cups we have for the kiddos to drink from are double lined with water in between the two layers.  The cups are clear so you can see through it and each of them has things floating in the water with a theme to it.  For example, the Valentine cups have red plastic hearts with thick round confetti floating in the water; and on the outside is a cute bear with a Valentine sentiment. So how is this related to crafting?  Oh, yeah… one of the cups, with a winter theme, actually split around the rim and the two layers separated.  Which means that’s the end of that cup and time to toss it in “File 13!”  But wait… all those plastic snowflakes going to waste?  Never!  And thus… the inspiration of my next card was born…

On this project I used the rubber stamp Cynthia from Make it Crafty. She is part of the 60’s Girlfriend Collection and even though she’s a spring/summer theme, I thought those flowers were be perfect for Christmas!  And yes, I know they’re blue – but that was my fault as I got carried away with the red dress before realizing that poinsettias are red.  Oops!  I couldn’t do red anymore so went with the next color to match the papers.  LOL

Here’s a closeup of Cynthia.  As a lesson… I colored this on sparkling paper and had the hardest time getting to the colors to blend.  I thought for sure it was the paper… until I realized that my markers are getting dry!  I should have paused to refill them, but by time I knew what the problem was, I was mentally finished with the coloring.  Ah, well, better luck for me next time.  (Assuming I’ve refilled my markers by then!  LOL)

Thanks for coming by today and I hope you’ve enjoyed this Christmas inspired project!  Head on over to the Make it Crafty Store Blog for more inspiration using fabulous stamps and great tutorials too!
