Cauldron Box

I made this black cauldron box for the 12th Day of Halloween Challenge at Simply Betty Stamps. Of course, it’s not just a box… it’s an explosion box! After making my first explosion box on Saturday I decided to make a bigger one that included all six Emo Halloweenies. This is the last and final challenge in the series and I went for a grand finale.

While searching for ideas, I came across a beautiful beehive explosion box created by Shoshi. She has some wonderful step-by-step photos if you’re interested in making one. I used her box as my starting point inspiration and this is what I ended up with… Ka-boom!

There is so much detail to go over so I divided up the pictures into groups. This first set shows the inner box walls that surround the pumpkin patch. Each gravestone flourish and dates were drawn by hand and I used a border stamps to fill in the bottom. Metal tags or circle punches were used to get the shapes.

The center of the box is a pumpkin patch with London Pumpkin and an alteration of Betty Witch. For Betty Witch, I wiped away one arm and the entire lower portion of the stamp then drew in a newer version flying a broomstick. I wanted to make the box in stages so it was easier to work on and the center part was glued in very last.

The outer box walls have the rest of the Emo Halloweenies. Lola Mummy’s color scheme was based off a monster we have in our front window. Millerstein has one brown eye and one blue eye – always a fun combination! For Christian Vamp I covered his face and hands in sparkling diamonds glitter which never show up in the photos. Lastly, I gave Rio Devil a glowing blue staff with three diamonds in the center.

Also around the outer box, each corner was decorated with more Halloween surprises. The first one is a Witches’ Hut I grabbed from Dulemba’s Coloring Page Tuesdays. She always has something fun to color and they work well for stamps. I’m sure you recognize the ghosts! That’s Casper and with two of the not-so-friendly ghosts. The third panel features the scarecrow which is only a portion of Haunted Halloween House from Make it Crafty. I cut out some of the crows from the paper I was using and placed one of them on the scarecrow. Lastly, I made another spider web and added three Lego spiders!

Here’s another view of the box open and a better view of the spider web. Each ring is held on by a looped string that is glued between the wall layers. This made it easier to thread the web and it also tucks in the box nicely.

Looking at the open box from the top shows most of the details. I attached Betty Witch in the center so that she actually pops up when the box opens. The rest of the tabs gently fall down provided the spiders don’t get tangled.

Closing the box takes a little more effort than the last box, but using the rubber bands makes it easier. I first close the inner box then I can focus on the outer box. Just before adding the lid, I remove the rubber band from the inner box; and once the lid is on, I can remove the second rubber band.

Did you know? An explosion is defined as a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually with the generation of high temperatures and the release of gases. An explosion creates a shock wave. If the shock wave is a supersonic detonation, then the source of the blast is called a “high explosive”.

Christmas Millie

I’m hosting this week’s challenge over at Lollipop Crafts and the theme is Winter Play! Check it out and I hope you can play along this week! The challenge is to create a card or project using a snow or winter theme… so turn on the air conditioner and pull out those winter stamps!

I made this card using Christmas Millie from Karber Digital Images. The snowman’s hat is actually cut out a hat from the decorative paper used in the background and it fit perfectly.

Did you know? The standard gauge (also named the Stephenson gauge after George Stephenson, or Normal gauge) is a widely-used rail gauge. Approximately 60% of the world’s existing railway lines are built to this gauge.

Welcome Winter

I made this card using Welcome Winter from Softpencil. The challenge this week at Lollipop Crafts is to create a card or project using Glitter, Sparkles or Gems – should be easy as pie so come join us! I used glitter on the snow and for a little detail I added stitch marks to the bunny so it would like the girl’s snuggle friend.

Did you know? A strudel is a type of layered pastry with a filling inside, often served with cream. It is most often associated with Austrian cuisine but is also a traditional pastry in the whole area formerly belonging to the Austro-Hungarian empire. The oldest Strudel recipe is from 1696, a handwritten recipe at the Viennese City Library, Wiener Stadtbibliothek.

I made this card using Albert from Limited Runs which is sponsoring our Lollipop Crafts challenge this week. The challenge is to create a card or project with a boy theme plus I used a Halloween colors challenge. Although this stamp was originally a boy in his father’s suit, I wanted to convert him into the mad scientist. I don’t know how I’ll ever use them all, but Halloween cards are so much fun to make!

Did you know? Minecraft is a sandbox game which allows players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world and has gained a considerable level of popularity. In January 2010, the number of registered users reached 100,000 but currently has surpassed 700,000 registered users. Notably, PayPal recently froze Notch’s account due to “a suspicious withdrawal or deposit”. At the time, Notch said there was about €600,000 in the account (about 750,000 US dollars) which has since been unlocked.

Have A Tweet Christmas

Did you know? Maize is the most widely grown crop in the Americas with 332 million metric tons grown annually in the United States alone. It is a grass domesticated by indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica in prehistoric times. The Aztecs and Mayans cultivated it in numerous varieties throughout central and southern Mexico, to cook or grind in a process called nixtamalization. Later the crop spread through much of the Americas. Between 1250 and 1700, nearly the whole continent had gained access to the crop.

Story of Me

The challenge is to create a card or project based on the sketch provided. I think kids need all the encouragement they can get to read so this was a must-have stamp for me! The second challenge is the theme “favorite things” which was easy… reading.

Did you know? Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has a history of hosting music, from Sunday concerts championed by P.T. Barnum in 1890 to the Gathering of the Vibes music festival in summer 2010. The park is two-and-a-half mile crescent-shape bordering Long Island South and Black Rock Harbor.
