Racing Rick

I made this card using Racing Rick from Make it Crafty and went with a bright boy themed card. However, I added lots of brown to tone down the colors so I could use it with an older age bracket. I remember spending countless hours playing with my brothers and the RC cars – lots of good memories.

Did you know? The Dalmatian is a breed of dog whose roots are often said to trace back to Dalmatia, a region of Croatia where the first illustrations of the dog have been found. The Dalmatian is noted for its unique black or brown spotted coat and was mainly used as a carriage dog in its early days. The Dalmatian is mostly known as the “Firehouse Dog” and the breed gained popularity after the Disney movies 101 Dalmatians.

What do elves, a frog, and kitchen have in common?

The Make it Colourful Challenge is what elves, a frog and kitchen have in common! This week is all about the kids and the challenge is for them to color something pink. Here are two of my daughters showing their stuff and bringing you two fabulous design team projects!

Lydia’s project features a pink frog (from “Pond A Lily)” and the “Christmas Elves” from Make it Crafty. She went all out with the punches and went for a dramatic look with the black background. (Age 4)

Cassandra wanted to try something a little more grand and challenged herself to coloring the Kitchen set (also from Make it Crafty). I thought she did a fabulous job and was even impressed with the placement. She had fund picking out the “right” ribbon and is very proud of her project. (Age 7).

This challenge is for the kids and I hope they all have just as much fun as mine did! Make sure to submit your projects into the collection before next Friday in the kid’s challenge at Make it Colourful. Have a great weekend!

Baking with Nana

Welcome to Grandma’s kitchen where she’s always happy to make you a batch of goodness while sharing stores. ;D I made this card using Baking with Nana from Belles ‘n Whistles and the Kitchen Isle and Kitchen Wall set from Make it Crafty.

I made this card for Challenge #9 at Make it Colourful where the theme is to color shine. I attempted to the color the kitchen first starting with the stainless steel elements. The smaller areas were easy but I it became difficult on the larger areas, such as the refrigerator.

The kitchen set comes with the two images separated which makes it versitle. I chose to use them independently then to create a flap for the card on the front so the isle could be moved. The flap was attached with a strip of folded paper and can open all the way.

Here’s the inside of the card with the flap open which shows the back wall of the kitchen and Grandma cooking. The tag is large enough to write a small sentiment or a card can be attached to the back for more writing.

Here’s one last view showing just the front part of the card/flap in the open position. The Prima flower was colored with Copic markers and the Make it Crafty laser cut swirls are covered with Liquid Pearls.

Did you know? A schooner is a type of sailing vessel characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts with the forward mast being no taller than the rear masts. According to the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, the first vessel called a schooner was built by builder Andrew Robinson and launched in 1713 from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Legend has it that the name was the result of a spectator exclaiming “Oh how she scoons”, scoon being similar to scon, a Scots word meaning to skip along the surface of the water. Robinson replied, “A schooner let her be.” According to Walter William Skeat, the term schooner comes from scoon, while the sch spelling comes from the later adoption of the Dutch and German spellings (“Schoner”).

Rosie to School

It’s busy weekends such as these that I’m glad I have a few extra cards “saved up” for posting. ;D Here’s one I made using the new Rosie to School image from Make it Crafty and I also used some of their corner flourishes and charms too. I love images that promote reading, and even though my daughter might think that book bag is full of homework, I like to think of it as being full of reading books.

Did you know? A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis. A set of two gimbals, one mounted on the other with pivot axes orthogonal, may be used to allow an object mounted on the innermost gimbal to remain immobile. Examples include gyroscopes, shipboard compasses, stoves and even drink holders typically use gimbals to keep them upright with respect to the horizon despite the ship’s pitching and rolling.

Guitar Kody & Relax Mae

The challenge this week at Make it Colourful is all about the light source. The challenge is to color the image with the primary light source coming from the upper left corner. I was going to do something dramatic but ended up with a softer color pallet.

This card was made with Guitar Kody and Relax Mae from Some Odd Girl; and the “handmade” tag was made with Flower Garden from Make it Crafty. I used more laser cut embellishments covered with Liquid Pearls and here is the Flower Garden up close:

Did you know? The roadrunners bird are inhabitants of the deserts of the Southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America; and are the ground foraging cuckoos. The bird, although capable of flight, spends most of its time on the ground. Roadrunners and other members of the cuckoo family have zygodactyl feet (two toes in front and two toes in back). Roadrunners can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour (32 km/h) and generally prefer sprinting to flying, however, they will fly to escape predators. The roadrunner has a dove-like “coo” that is slow and descending. It also makes a rapid, vocalized clattering sound with its beak.

Update: I was the top Fav at Some Odd Girl for this challenge!

Summer Breeze

I made this card featuring Summer Breeze, designed by yours truly, and hope to have Spring Whisper released and previewed tomorrow. 😀 For this card, I created a scene using two Make it Crafty images and basically colored the whole card.

I was working on this card while my Mom was cutting up cotton shirts for another project and I snatched some of the scraps to make the bow. I kept the rest of the card pretty simple to keep the attention on the images.

Most of the time I color withing a specific hue range, for example, the hair is colored with E50, E51, and E53. However, I wanted to try a new technique for the tree and colored it using a mixture of hues. I started out laying down a basic color and shadow then built up the colors one layer at a time. The more layers I applied, the lighter I kept the colors. It was interesting to see how the browns changed colors and the end result gives the shadows a different color than the lights.

Fun Challenge: Make it Crafty – Australia Day Challenge (Aussie Slang Interpretation)

Here’s a warning to empty your mouth and put your drink down before reading on… I’m going to “give it another try” for Zoe’s Aussie slang interpretation and define “give it a burl.” Ok, that’s enough laughing for now, you can pick up your drink again. ;D Here’s my definition…

Give it a burl: This is a common tactic used in debates to help speed up a resolution. When all hope is lost and you’re about to loose, you “give it a burl” or in other terms “throw in a monkey wrench” (just say something totally unrelated and absubtly rediculous) and then enjoy your opponents reaction.

Did you know? The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) formed in 1970, is one of eight Independent System Operators in North America. The ERCOT region occupies the entire Texas Interconnection, which occupies nearly all of the state of Texas. Unlike the other major NERC interconnections, the high voltage transmission and energy market within the Texas Interconnection is operated by ERCOT as essentially a single power system instead of as a network of cooperating utility companies.
