Siren of Pearls

For those celebrating the 4th of July this weekend – Happy Holidays! Our challenge this time at Make it Colourful is to “Add reflections to water” and is so much easier than it sounds. Give it a try but you’re welcome to check back on the challenge site on Tuesday for a few tips.

This is my card and I merged three Make it Crafty images together: Pirate Ship, Palm Trees and Siren of Pearls. Even though it turned out well, I had lots of problems with my coloring – can you believe it?! I tried out a new paper and it was like coloring on dry chalks – just soaked up the ink with no room for blending.

The reflection in the water is done by adding blobs of color under the objects – like orange under the mermaid; and browns and dark blues under the boat and island; and green under the leaves. The way I colored the water made it easy to daub it in without much blending needed – good thing for me. ;D After that I added some white highlights back into the water with a white gel pen.

Main Stamp:
Pirate Ship, Palm Trees and Siren of Pearls (MiC)
Patterned Paper: le Cirque (Graphic45)
Chipboard: Flower Leaf Swirls (MiC)

I finally bought an old dictionary at a used bookstore so I could tear out pages for projects and used one on this one. I love the printed text, however, I hardly ever read what words I’ve pulled so hopefully any naughty words get hidden. LOL Anyway, here’s a close up of the Siren of Pearls – I love how bright her tail turned out next to that blue water.

Just a few reminders/announcements: Don’t forget about the fabulous challenges taking place to celebrate Make it Crafty’s first birthday!! You can check out those details HERE. Lastly, Tiddly Inks and Make it Crafty and coming out with a joint release so make sure to check out the details HERE. Have a great weekend and be safe!

Cici, Fifi and Toto

Welcome to another challenge at Make it Colourful where this week we have a woozy of a coloring challenge! LOL Now, that’s not to scare you away because it’s actually really simple once you understand… so stay with me! So what’s the challenge? Color Reflections! Muaha ha ha.

I have to admit, this is one of those cards that I took multiple pictures while in the process of coloring. I colored the images as normal and assembled my card until it was complete then took a picture of it “just in case” my next step didn’t work out. LOL It’s true! Then I added the reflecting colors on the images and retook the pictures of the newly finalized card. ;D

The color reflections can be seen all over the three sprites – it’s where one item “spills over” onto the other and actually does wonders to cover up mistakes if you color out of the lines. Here’s a comparison of the before and after shots where you can clearly see the added reflections all over these cute little tykes! Click on the picture for a larger view – the effect is subtle and mainly in the shadows of the images.

I’m not sure how I like the effect – on one hand the extra color adds a lot of depth to the image and brings the coloring closer to real life. In that aspect it looks gorgeous! However, on the other hand, the extra color is different and I brings down the “brightness” of the images. Of course, I was going for a dramatic effect to show the technique so perhaps there is a middle ground that would be perfect.

I wanted to really showcase these sprites, Cici, Fifi and Toto, so I kept the rest of the card and embellishments darker and more on the monochrome side. That way the colorful sprites really “pop” and grab the eye’s attention. Hope you like the card and have fun with the challenge – can’t wait to see!

Did you know? Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are flashes of gamma rays associated with extremely energetic explosions in distant galaxies. GRBs are the most luminous electromagnetic events known to occur in the universe and typically lasts 20–40 seconds. Most observed GRBs are believed to be a narrow beam of intense radiation released during a supernova event, as a rapidly rotating, high-mass star collapses to form a neutron star or black hole. GRBs were first detected in 1967 by the Vela satellites, but it was not until 1997 that they were better understood, with the use of optical spectroscopy to detect the first X-ray and optical afterglows and to directly measure their redshifts.

Coriander

As the hottest months of summer approaches in the northern hemisphere our minds often turn to water and vacations at the beach. At least I wouldn’t mind a nice getaway at paradise beach with soft warm sand to run barefoot in. ;D This card features Coriander who can be playing in the sandbox in the backyard but for this card I’d like to think she’s living a dream on the perfect vacation!

The two images are Coriander, which was released today at Little Miss Muffet Stamps, and the background is Message in Bottle from Make it Crafty. I combined these images because I thought it was a fun story they told together – after all, wouldn’t a message in a bottle be quite the find!

I hope you enjoy this preview and that it inspires your “mini” vacation on a card. 😀 Come support me over at the Challenges & New Releases blog to see all the new releases this week and to play along in the challenge! You can use any stamp in the challenge, however, if you use a LMMS then the theme is always “Anything Goes” – I would love to see what you’re making with those images. ;D

I’d like to enter this into the following challenges:
Amber’s Crafts and Stuff Challenge #14 (vacation)
PaperPlay Challenge Week 24 (at the beach)
Lollipop Crafts Challenge #41 (inspired by a song: The Go Go’s Vacation)
The Rubber Cafe Challenges (summer)
Alota Rubber Stamps Challenge #61 (summertime)

Did you know? Summer is the warmest of the four temperate seasons, between spring and autumn. At the summer solstice, the days are longest and the nights are shortest, with day-length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. The date of the beginning of summer varies according to climate, culture, and tradition, but when it is summer in the southern hemisphere it is winter in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa.

Kids’ Creations

My kids love to create along side of me and have really gotten into the spirit of challenges! They like to follow along in my footsteps and often ask what the challenge I’m making a specific card for. ;D So here are a few of their creations that they wanted to show off…

Jump

Here’s my second preview for this week using a Little Darling stamp and one of my favorites from this release! You can check out all the previews this week at the Love to Stamp store blog. This one being showcased today is Jump …

I’ve pared this stamp with the background image from Make it Crafty called Hilly Lane. It took a lot of time to color all that grass but I like how it turned out! Here’s the background by itself…

Most of the card was colored so I didn’t go all out on embellishments but still included a few of my favorites. ;D The felt sun is a die cut from My Favorite Things and a I cut it to contour the horizon of the background. Then the corners are those fabulous laser cut embellishments from Make it Crafty that some how appear on all my cards. ;D I put a few drops of Liquid Pearls on them for fun.

Angie is giving away a grand prize to one lucky commenter this week so you can get your hands on a few of these new releases! Also don’t forget about the Little Darlings Challenge challenge where the rules were changed to include all images – the theme is all about summer

Lastly, the girl image was cut out and put on foam dots so she “jumps” off the background. Hope you enjoy the preview and that you liked my card. Happy Stamping this week!

Did you know? The Braille system is a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write, and was the first digital form of writing. Braille was devised in 1825 by Louis Braille, a blind Frenchman. Each Braille character, or cell, is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each. A dot may be raised at any of the six positions to form sixty-four (26) possible subsets, including the arrangement in which no dots are raised.
